Rapid Growth of Massive Galaxies: A Paradox for Hierarchical Formation Models

چکیده

On behalf of the survey teams I summarize the designs and results of the Las Campanas Infrared Survey and Gemini Deep Deep Survey, both of which were initiated to understand the nature of red galaxies and to study the history of stellar mass assembly. Our results from luminosity function analysis, ISM absorption line measurements, and spectral synthesis modeling show that near-infrared selected galaxies at 1 < z < 2 are not only massive and abundant but also old and metal enriched, indicating rapid formation of massive systems at higher redshifts.

Photometric Properties of the Most Massive High-redshift Galaxies

We calculate the observable properties of the most massive high-redshift galaxies in the hierarchical formation scenario where stellar spheroid and supermassive black hole growth are fueled by gasrich mergers. Combining high-resolution hydrodynamical simulations of the hierarchical formation of a z ∼ 6 quasar, stellar population synthesis models, template AGN spectra, prescriptions for interste...

Observing Massive Galaxy Formation

A major goal of contemporary astrophysics is understanding the origin of the most massive galaxies in the universe, particularly nearby ellipticals and spirals. Theoretical models of galaxy formation have existed for many decades, although low and high redshift observations are only beginning to put constraints on different ideas. We briefly describe these observations and how they are revealin...

Hierarchical Clustering and the Butcher-Oemler Effect

We show that the rapid evolution in the fraction of blue, star-forming galaxies seen in clusters as a function of redshift (the Butcher-Oemler effect) can be explained very simply if structure formation in the universe proceeeds hierarchically. We show that a rich cluster observed at high redshift has had a significantly different evolutionary history to a cluster of the same richness observed ...

Properties of Early-type, Dry Galaxy Mergers and the Origin of Massive, Slowly Rotating, Pressure Supported Elliptical Galaxies

The luminosity dependence of kinematical and isophotal properties of elliptical galaxies is investigated using numerical simulations of galaxy merging, combined with semi-analytical models of hierarchical structure formation. Mergers of spiral galaxies as the only formation mechanism for elliptical galaxies can neither reproduce the kinematical and photometric properties of very massive ellipti...

A MASSIVE, DISTANT PROTO-CLUSTER AT z = 2.47 CAUGHT IN A PHASE OF RAPID FORMATION?

Numerical simulations of cosmological structure formation show that the universe’s most massive clusters, and the galaxies living in those clusters, assemble rapidly at early times ( z 2.5 4 < < ). While more than 20 proto-clusters have been observed at z 2  based on associations of 5–40 galaxies around rare sources, the observational evidence for rapid cluster formation is weak. Here we repor...
